A late amendment to the fixture list and something of a scramble by Dan to put a team together we set off for Sandwich with a team of 10 plus Steve Johns’ young son Owen (aged 9) who we thought might be able to take to the field for us if Sandwich agreed.
Moxo lost the toss and Sandwich decided to bat first and agreed that Owen could field. Our bowling attack started with Steve and Dan E with Dan claiming a wicket in the 2nd over, a stumping by Moxo – 1 for 1 – a great start. S. Key was next in for Sandwich and taking most of the strike pushed the runs along steadily. Dan struck again the the 8th over with an LBW decision claiming the other opener – 20 for 2 – and next over Steve claimed his wicket with a catch by John Kearns – 21 for 3 off 9. The next pairing proved very stubborn with some fine batting adding 71 to the total in 14 overs, Andy Martin (a friend of Rob’s) finally made the breakthrough thanks to a catch by Trev 1 (he’d earlier dropped the same player  ) – 92 for 4 off 25. Harry Owen brought into the attack and he takes a wicket in his first over, a second stumping for Moxo – 139 for 5 off 32.
The same pairing taking the 6th wicket, this time with a catch behind – 169 for 6 off 34. Tom brought back into the attack in the 38th over to see Key reach his century and Sandwich the 200 mark but he then bowls the No. 8 – 200 for 7 off 38. The next pair see the 40 overs out with Key finishing not out on 110 and Sandwich reaching 231. A word of praise for young Owen Johns who fielded with great concentration at fine leg throughout the innings, running willingly after the ball and showing off a good arm when throwing in. Bowling figures:- Johns 6-1-23-1, Edmunds 8-1-26-1, T. Leaver 7-0-45-1, Davies 5-0-20-0, A. Martin 5-1-25-1, Kearns 2-0-17-0 (a huge improvement on last week!), Trev 2-0-28-0, Harry 3-0-25-2, A Leaver 2-0-14-0.
With Lewso on the missing list, our batting line-up opened with Trev 1 and Kearns and it’s Kearns who perishes first, being bowled for a duck in the third over – 9 for 1. Tom joins Trev and they add 8 runs to the total when Trev is bowled for 8 by the same bowler – 17 for 2 off 5. Dan E joins Tom and grafting steadily they bat sensibly through 19 overs, adding 51 to the total when Dan dollies a catch, going for 16 of 56 balls – 68 for 3 off 24. Andy in next but he is bowled for 4 two overs later – 77 for 4 off 26 and this heralded the Wood collapse. Tom unfortunately run out in the next over for a very well put together 34 (top score – off 76 balls) – 77 for 5 off 27, 77 for 6 as Arthur goes for a golden in the same over. Rob perishes for a duck next over – 77 for 7, as do Moxo and Harry – 78 for 9 off 29.
But we are not done yet as Sandwich agree that Owen can go in at 11 to partner his dad for the last wicket. He faces the last 2 balls of over 29 and dad plays out a maiden for over 30. Owen plays out over 31, managing to get something on the third ball to a great cheer from the boundary and it is dad that perishes in the 32nd over for 4 with the Wood bowled out for 82. A very proud father and son are applauded off the pitch and Owen is rewarded with a Colts Star Player award for his endeavours throughout the afternoon. So thanks to Sandwich for playing the match so fairly, to Moxo for his efforts to put together our Saturday teams (the regular updates by e-mail are great) and to our Colts – Harry for his 2 wickets, Tom for his 34 and hopefully Woodite in the making – Owen Johns.
