Little Chart CC
A good all round bowling performance helped the Wood to secure a hard fought win over Little Chart. Batting first, the Reene/Rice opening partnership began cautiously against one of the stronger opening bowling attacks in the league. Crucially, the Wood avoided losing early wickets, and with useful middle order contributions from Macca and in particular Winston, a big total looked on the cards. However, wickets began to fall at regular intervals and no-one managed to pass fifty. The Wood innings was also marred by an injury to Tractor, who headed one from the Little Chart spinner. Incredibly, Winston, batting at the other end, didn’t call him through for a leg bye, but Tractor was forced off for treatment. He was to return later, with more than a hint of Terry Butcher about him and managed a few decent strikes. The Wood innings faded slightly towards the end, and Little Chart secured their bowling point in the final over. On a fast outfield, 188 seemed no better than par.
Bouyed by a Lewsey tea, the Wood were fired up from the start in the field. Their skipper had evidently exceeded his quota of e numbers again, but conceded only seven runs in his opening five overs. Crucially the back up bowling was also now able to offer support. Duckboy, having gone for 10 off his first two balls, bowled his first decent spell of the season, going for only 15 in his next 8.4 overs, as wickets began to fall. Macca swung the ball appreciably and celebrated the dismissal of their number three as if it was his first wicket since August (oh wait a second… it was). He followed it up with another wicket in the same over, by which stage he had no idea how to celebrate. Wisely he avoided the attempted high five with Billy. Many an injury has been caused that way.
Jayasuriya Jo also got in on the act as the Wood really turned the screw. Little Chart suddenly found themselves at around 100 for 8 with only ten overs to go. At this stage it all started to go curiously wrong for the Wood. A series of lusty blows and sloppy misfields cost the Wood a valuable bowling point as for the third league game the Wood left the field with the opposition nine wickets down. Billy took particular stick, both from the opposition batsmen and his own teammates as his second spell proved less effective. However, he held his nerve and Macca bowled tightly at the other end, as the Wood secured a 17 run victory.
