Natwest Cricketforce 2015

nwcf2014The Saltwood CC Natwest CricketForce event will be on the 28th March and we need as may members as possible to come along and help get the club ready for the season ahead. If the chance to help your club and the free BBQ isn’t enough to entice you along then how about a chance to win a hot air balloon flight thanks to our sponsor, Kent Ballooning. Paying your subs by the 28th March gets you one entry into the prize draw and helping out at Natwest CricketForce gets you another, so put the date in your diary with a leisurely 10am start. If our army of junior members want to bring a parent with them to help out they get an extra entry into the prize draw!

There’s loads to do as the pavilion needs a good wash down and a new coat of paint, the drive needs a scrub and the entrance tarted up. If the funding comes through we might be putting our new sight screens together, but if not we’ll patching up the old ones so bring as many tools as you can and we’ll make short work of the list and get in the nets.

Balloon flight prize draw is open to anyone who signs the register with their contact details and helps for at least 2 hours. No cash alternative, draw will take place on the 29th March, the chairman’s decision is final.

Saltwood CC 50 Club

Saltwood Cricket Club LogoThe cricket season is over for another year but work hasn’t stopped at the ground. Soon after our last home match the £20,000 wicket renovation and extension project started thanks to funding and support from the Roger De Haan Charitable Trust, Shepway Sports Trust and Kent Playing Fields Association. The top surface of the old square has been dug up, levelled and re-built with an extra five wickets built from scratch. We will have eight wickets ready for the start of the 2015 season and another five ready for 2016.

The improvements to the club’s facilities don’t stop there. The committee have already raised £4,000 of the £6,300 needed to buy a new roller engine and sightscreens and are hopeful to secure the remaining £2,300 in the next few months.

Thanks to funding from Sport England we will be running our first ‘Satellite Club’ at Brockhill School. The 13 week course will run on Tuesdays from April 2015 and help to build the profile of cricket and Saltwood CC. We’ll also be running coaching sessions at SCC for those that want to progress to playing for the senior teams.

In another first for the club, senior net practice will be run by an ECB L3 coach who can hopefully teach us all how to bat, bowl and field properly!

Despite raising over £27,000 in the last few months for improvement projects, we still need to raise funds to pay the day to day expenses involved in running the club. If you think the committee’s efforts to raise over £70,000 in the last few years is worthy your appreciation then please buy some tickets for the 50 Club. The 20 weeks of free coaching alone is worth at least one ticket from every playing member so please print the form and fill it in. Tickets are just £10 each and there are 13 prizes on offer in December.

Saltwood CC Juniors

Some changes for Saltwood CC Juniors in 2014. We’ve switched from Thursdays to Mondays so we don’t clash with football training and we’ve split up the age groups so the coaching will be targeted at the type of cricket you’ll be playing at school. Annual subs are £25 and include the 12 scheduled practice sessions during term time, plus any extra sessions that we run during the summer holidays. The juniors section is for boys and girls from Year 3 upwards with each age group practicing according to the ECB guidelines. (more…)

Indoor Nets @ Folkestone CC

three-hillsWe’re all booked up for 6 weeks of pre-season nets at the Three Hills Sports Park (Folkestone CC). It all starts on the 19th Feb from 9.30pm to 10.30pm and costs just £3 a week with the last session on the 25th March.

If you need a lift to Folkestone, please email me at ian@saltwoodcc.com and I’ll try to get things organised. Attendance last year was poor and showed in the early season performances. For those that aren’t driving, you can get a pint at the bar afterwards. Luckily for the injury prone, they have a nice supply of ice to apply to injuries.

Saltwood vs Minster

A fantastic win for Saltwood, played in good spirit against a nice bunch of lads from Minster CC. After winning the toss and putting Minster into bat, Cowlo’s decision wasn’t looking to bright at 70 for no wicket. A change of bowling and a great run-out proved to be the inspiration for a mini collapse, taking Minster from 70-0 to 97-4. (more…)

SCC vs Herne Bay CC

After a week of rain it was nice to see the sun returning for our match against Herne Bay CC. Cowlo lost the toss and Saltwood were put in to bat against the opening pair of Beeson and Gillard. With Jeremy (4) still banned from the cut shot until 1st June he decided to use his pads instead but found that standing right in front of the stumps was not a good plan of action. (more…)

SCC & Elham Valley vs The Rain and a 50* for Frank Hobbs

With predictions of rain sweeping in at 5pm there were calls for a 20/20 match from back seat captains, but this was quickly ignored. With Captain Shah phoning in his orders to stand-in Dan Cowell, Saltwood won the toss and elected to bat despite Ian’s life long rule of bowling first.

‘Fresh’ from his 55 the previous day, G decided to conserve his energy for the next round of league matches by getting bowled for 0 in the first over and was quickly joined by Tom Carr (0) leaving Saltwood on the verge of an epic collapse at 5-2. (more…)

Close finish against Ramsgate Corinthians

After a complete stuffing by Brook last week in the Regional League Saltwood were determined to get their first victory of the season against Ramsgate Corinthians.

With rain predicted for later in the day the match was cut down to 35 overs each form the start and Ramsgate got off to a good start by winning the toss and electing to bat first. A solid start by the openers before Tom Leaver took them both out (45-1 and 48-2) A steady middle order performance left Ramsgate on 157-6 off their 35 overs. (more…)

Another Sport England Grant

More good news for Saltwood CC! Another successful application to the Sport England Small Grant fund and £4,000 to buy some equipment to keep the wicket in top shape. With Hythe Green CC holding their home league matches at our ground we decided that more kit to help with wicket prep and repair was vital. Here’s what we got…..

Total Play Climate Cover, 2 Total Growth Cover Germination Sheets, Scotts Rotary Fertiliser & Seed Spreader, Weasel Decompactor, Drag Brush Drag Mat and a SISIS Truspread Drop Spreader. (more…)

Natwest Cricket Force 2013

With just over 1 month to go until the start of the season and one inch of snow on wicket, there’s plenty to do before the first ball is bowled so we’ll be taking part in the 2013 Natwest Cricket Force Weekend on the 6th and 7th April.

We’ve already got a list of over 50 jobs to complete so it would be great to see everyone turn out to help at some point over that weekend. Over the last 12 months the committee has refurbished the pavilion and made if wheelchair accessible, installed a double bay practice net, bought a bowling machine, wicket cover and water hog, installed new changing room benches and paid for Matt and Louis to get their UKCC2 coaching certificates. All that we ask in return is for some help from every member to get the pavilion and ground ready for the season ahead. It is after all your club.

Please bring tools, rakes, saws, gloves wellies and anything else you think you might need for a day of labouring inside and out. You’ll be fed and watered throughout the day, so no excuses please. (more…)
